The Northside Oldtimers held their fifth annual unity gathering on Saturday, Aug. 6. & Sunday Aug. 7. Thousands of people attended the event, which was started to introduce younger generations to their relatives across the Northside in order to combat violence.
In recent years, the event has become something of Pittsburgh-wide event for the city’s black community. Live music, family cookouts, class reunions, kayaking and commerce all coincide to give the event a festival atmosphere.
The unity gathering lasted from noon to 7 p.m. and began with a children’s march from the old Columbus Middle School.
On Sept. 7, this article was updated to show the following correction: The Northside Oldtimers was founded by Fred Bulls, English Burton, Fred Forrester and John Arms. According to Bulls, Dave Johnson is not a founding member. Click here for photos
